Migrant Workers Protest Union Blacklisting

There are serious allegations that migrant farm workers in British Columbia are being blacklisted for voicing their support for the union and trying to exercise their basic Human Right to organize and bargain collectively. United latinos through (United Latinos) president Johnny Rodriguez is working with UFCW International union on a solution to this issue. Charges have been filed with the B.C. Labour Board that the federal government of Mexico and its Vancouver consulate conspired with two British Columbia agriculture operations to blacklist Mexican seasonal migrant workers from returning to Canada this season because they were union sympathizers. UFCW Canada and the United Latinos of UFCW are working together on this issue. We are taking direct action to rectify the situation. United Latinos of UFCW stand behind all workers' rights to a voice on the job and right to collectively bargain. Any threats to those rights are direct attacks to the workers and their families. November 8th Elections May Set Tone For 2012

A big Ohio win demonstrates that labor unions still send a strong message: America's working families want and deserve a good job that pays a fair wage, decent affordable health care, access to a quality education for their children. UFCW International president put it best, "The repeal of Senate Bill 5 is bigger than just one law or one state. It sends a message to all those who would try to balance the budget on the backs of our workers: you do so at your own peril. It shows that the right to bargain collectively for a better life is fundamental?not some perk that can be stripped away on a whim. The votes cast today in Columbus and Cleveland and everywhere in between will have aftershocks in Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and Washington D.C. United Latinos has participated throughout the country in their perspective local elections to make sure labor friendly elected officials and measures are passed. Many members and their locals participated in precinct walks and phone banks to encourage not only UFCW members but union members to get out and vote. Many hurdles have been bestowed upon us, with increasing attacks on labor we understand that we need to continue to play defense, but we also understand that the economic mess we find ourselves in today was caused by Wall Street, not Main Street. We anticipate 2012 elections to be close, but as we continue to inform and mobilize members through voter registration and/or through the process towards citizenship, we not only will strengthen our union but we will be ready for 2012. According to the Pew Hispanic Center Latino participation in midterm elections has increased as has the number of eligible latino voters. However, even though more Latinos than ever are participating in the nation's elections, their representation among the electorate remains below their representation in the general population. In 2010, 16.3% of the nation's population was Latino, but only 10.1% of eligible voters and fewer than 7% of voters were Latino. Two factors deter greater numbers in eligible voters: youth and ineligibility. The under 18 (ineligible to vote) population is at a staggering 34.9% and the population that is ineligible to vote is at 22.4%. We have to continue to target our eligible voters (42.7%). The latino voice can make the difference. United Latinos is committed to registering our brothers and sisters to vote in a potentially pivotal election. Let's get ready to GOTV!

April Fourth: Revive the Dream

These uncertain times call for committed leadership from our elected officials.

But in state after state, politicians are blaming working men and women—teachers and nurses, supermarket cashiers and clerks, police officers, snowplow drivers, garbage collectors, and firefighters—for the economic turmoil.

Because elected leaders are trying to take away the rights and silence the voice of everyday working people as a "solution" to the reckless behavior of Wall Street brokers whose actions caused the economic collapse.

WE ARE STICKING TOGETHER APRIL 4th AND EVERY DAY TO DEMAND LEADERSHIP THAT BRINGS US TOGETHER, NOT DRIVES US APART

We are standing together with

- Stop attacking workers

- Worker rights are civil rights

- Put aside the politics of division and do the hard work of creating public policy that generates good jobs—family and community sustaining jobs.

- At this hour of economic peril, we must stand together or we will surely fall together

all workers from every race and background, with students and women, religious, environmental, and civil rights supporters. We are sticking together to tell politicians:

Workers nationwide will be standing up and sticking together during lunch breaks, at church vigils, in community centers, street corners, town halls, and state capitols.

United Latinos Convention and Educational Conference Begins

United Latinos President Johnny Rodriguez, Local 711 President Roberta West, and Director of Region 8 Shaun Barclay welcomed participants to the United Latinos of UFCW Convention and Educational Conference at the Golden Nugget Hotel in Las Vegas.

“Welcome to a union hotel in a union town,” said President West in opening remarks. In recounting the story of the longest successful strike of hotel workers at Frontier’s, she pointed out to the resilience of Latino workers, members of Local 711, who kept up the fight and never gave up. President Rodriguez introduced Director Barclay, reminding participants that our Region 8 host was among the original group that created the United Latinos almost 25 years ago (1987).

A special recognition was made to International President Joe Hansen’s recent appointment by President Obama to the Trade Commission.
